The Canadian government has recently introduced a new stream in its Express Entry immigration track, specifically targeting skilled individuals with a background in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Canada has been actively easing immigration policies to address worker shortages and fill labor gaps within the country. In line with this, Canada’s Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, announced the creation of an open work-permit stream that would allow approximately 10,000 American H-1B visa holders to come and work in Canada.

Minister Fraser emphasized the importance of recruiting top talent from around the world to ensure Canada remains at the forefront of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The introduction of the STEM category-based selection round aims to increase access to permanent residence for skilled workers with STEM experience. The government is enthusiastic about welcoming these talented and innovative newcomers to the country.

The first STEM round for category-based selection is scheduled to open in the week of July 5. These rounds will continue throughout the year alongside general invitation rounds. The Canadian government plans to release further details in the coming weeks.

The press release highlights the significance of focusing on candidates with STEM expertise, including data scientists, software developers and programmers, mathematicians, statisticians and actuaries, as well as electrical and electronics engineers.
