Enhanced Path to Canadian PR for Master’s & PhD Students

For students pursuing master’s or Ph.D. programs in Canada, obtaining permanent residence (PR) has become more accessible. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a new Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) policy on February 15, 2024. This policy grants international student graduates of master’s programs at Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) a three-year PGWP, regardless of the program’s duration.

This change simplifies the path to PR in Canada by providing students with extended time to gain valuable Canadian work experience, which is often a requirement for immigration applications. Work experience acquired in Canada can significantly boost a candidate’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in the Express Entry application system, thus enhancing their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR.

Higher Education

Moreover, higher education, such as master’s or Ph.D. degrees, is rewarded with additional CRS points under the Express Entry system. For instance, master’s students receive 126 to 135 points, and Ph.D. students receive 140 to 150 points, depending on their marital status.

Furthermore, many Canadian provinces and territories offer dedicated Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams for master’s and Ph.D. graduates, providing additional pathways to PR. Provinces like Ontario, British Columbia, and Manitoba have specific streams tailored for graduates from these programs.

In essence, the recent changes in the PGWP policy, coupled with the existing immigration pathways and PNP streams, make it more feasible for master’s and Ph.D. students in Canada to pursue permanent residence in the country.
