Canada’s Express Entry System Overhauls CRS Scoring

Canada’s Express Entry system has undergone a significant shift, following the federal government’s decision to remove Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points for arranged employment, effective March 25, 2025. This change has had a direct impact on the candidate pool, particularly affecting higher-scoring profiles.

The Impact of CRS Points Removal

As per data from CIC News, the removal of CRS points for arranged employment has caused a dramatic drop in the number of high-scoring candidates. In particular, the 501–600 CRS score range witnessed a decrease of 5,740 profiles between March 16 and April 14. Other high-scoring categories, such as the 491–500 and 481–490 ranges, also saw reductions in candidate profiles, losing 1,618 and 984 profiles, respectively. Previously, candidates in these ranges benefited from additional CRS points (50 or 200) for having arranged employment.

Total Candidate Pool Increases Despite Declines in Higher Scores

While the number of high-scoring profiles has declined, the total number of candidates in the Express Entry pool increased by 7,373 during this period. A notable surge occurred in the 461–470 CRS score range, which saw an addition of 2,157 profiles. Many of these candidates had previously scored above 500, thanks to the now-removed employment points. The 401–450 range also experienced substantial growth, with 5,814 new profiles. Lower score bands, such as the 351–400 and 301–350 ranges, gained 1,677 and 1,496 profiles respectively, while the lowest range, 0–300, grew by 2,516 profiles.

New Distribution of Profiles in the Express Entry Pool

As of April 14, 2025, the total number of candidates in the Express Entry pool reached 244,282. The largest group, with 71,542 profiles, now falls in the 451–500 CRS score band. The 401–450 range follows closely with 67,301 profiles. Meanwhile, the high score range of 501–600 now contains 19,782 candidates, a significant decrease from previous months.

Despite the overall growth in the pool by over 25,000 profiles since December 2024, the number of profiles in top score bands, such as 501–600, 491–500, and 481–490, has remained relatively stable compared to the end of the previous year.

Government’s Intentions Behind the Changes

The Express Entry system is vital for managing immigration applications for Canada’s key economic immigration programs. CRS scores are a key determinant in receiving Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence. The government has stated that the removal of CRS points for arranged employment aims to bring more balance and fairness to the selection process, ensuring that candidates without job offers are not at a disadvantage.

For many candidates, these changes may require a shift in strategy, particularly those who previously relied on job offers to boost their CRS scores.
