Canada Invites 3,000 CEC Candidates in Latest Express Entry Draw

The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) regularly conducts Express Entry draws to invite eligible candidates to apply for permanent residency in Canada. These draws play a crucial role in shaping the country’s immigration landscape. Let’s delve into the recent trends and key aspects of these draws.

Canada Invites 3,000 CEC Candidates

Program-Specific Draws

Program-specific draws target candidates from specific permanent residency programs, rather than inviting applicants from all programs. The recent draw on May 30, 2024, specifically focused on candidates in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). This draw marked the first time CEC candidates were invited since September 14, 2021, and featured the lowest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of the year for a non-category-based selection draw.

Category-Based Selection and Recent History

In May 2023, IRCC introduced category-based selection, emphasizing specific criteria for draws. Despite a month-long pause, draws resumed in April 2024. Before the pause, there were four draws in April:

  • April 10: A general draw invited 1,280 candidates.
  • April 11: A category-based selection draw targeted 4,500 Express Entry candidates in STEM occupations.
  • April 23: IRCC invited 2,095 candidates in a general draw.
  • April 24: A French proficiency category-based selection draw invited 1,400 candidates.

Future Projections

French proficiency is expected to lead category-based selection draws in 2024. Bilingual candidates with strong French skills have higher CRS scores, enhancing their chances of successful economic integration.

STEM occupations will receive the second-highest number of Invitations to Apply (ITAs) at 25%, followed by healthcare occupations at 15%. Transport, trades, and agriculture/agri-food categories will account for 5% or less of ITAs issued in category-based draws.

General Draws and Conclusion

The remaining 21.5% of ITAs will be issued in general draws. Notably, program-specific draws were not mentioned, indicating a shift toward category-based selection.

IRCC’s commitment to “domestic draws” aims to help temporary residents transition to permanent status and manage overall temporary resident levels in Canada.

In summary, Express Entry draws play a pivotal role in shaping Canada’s immigration policies, reflecting the country’s commitment to attracting skilled individuals and fostering economic growth.
