Alberta Makes a New Immigration Program for Tech Workers

New Immigration Program: Alberta is launching a new fast-track immigration program for tech workers.

Alberta’s Minister of Immigration, Tyler Shandro, announced the Accelerated Take Pathway on January 13. The province began accepting applications for the new program in December.

Fast-Track Immigration Program for Tech Workers

To be eligible, technical professionals need to have a profile in the federal government’s Express Entry system and be eligible for the Alberta Express Entry stream.

“Under this new way, tech experts from Canada and abroad can become permanent residents in 6 months if they have a job offer in an in-demand tech industry company,” Shandro said, although Express Entry processing takes an average of nine months had time.

“As with priority application processing, technical professionals will also receive a letter of support from the Government of Alberta if they require a work permit.”

According to the Alberta Enterprise Corporation, there are more than 3,000 technology companies in Alberta. According to the Alberta Technology Deal Flow Study 2021, Alberta’s tech sector has grown by 233% since 2012. However, tech companies still face challenges in accessing workers, especially sales and technical talent.

Apply Step-by-Step to Accelerated Tech Pathway

You must first be eligible for the Alberta Express Entry stream to be selected for accelerated processing under the Accelerated Tech Pathway.

This PNP has 3 phases:

1. Get a Profile in the Express Entry System

The first step is to go to the express entry pool of candidates. You require to be qualified for one of the following 3 immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Workers Program,
  • Federal Skilled Trade Program.

To use for the Accelerated Tech Pathway, you fill out an online form for the AINP (Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program). Through the form, you send your Express Entry profile and information about your technical job in Alberta.

2. AINP Determines Your Eligibility

AINP checks that you meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the Alberta Express Entry stream. If so, AINP will send you an email inviting you to apply for a provincial nomination. You cannot apply without this invitation, and you cannot use enrolment under a different AINP stream to apply.

3. Apply

Once you have received an email invitation from Alberta, you determine whether you meet the evaluation criteria. If AINP detects fraud or misrepresentation in an application, they can ban you from reapplying for up to five years.

Completed applications go to a pool of eligible applications. AINP considers these applications for provincial nomination.

If Alberta offers you a nomination, you have 30 days to accept it using your online Express Entry profile. You will then be added 600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points to your Express Entry score.

Enrolment does not guarantee that you will become a permanent resident, but it does get you to the top of the Express Entry pool. You must apply for permanent residency once the federal government, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sends you an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in an express entry draw.
